Met Eireann has issued a red rain warning for Galway ahead of Storm Bert, due to hit the county starting on Friday 22 November and continuing through Saturday 23 November.

The forecaster warned that the weather system will cause dangerous driving conditions as well as possible flooding and damage to property.

The highest accumulations of rain are expected in West Galway with areas such as Clifden likely to be heavily affected.

The red rain warning, which is in place from midnight to 10am on Saturday, also applies to county Cork.

Nationwide wind and rain warnings

On top of the red warnings, an orange rain warning has been issued and covers counties Waterford, Kerry, Clare, Mayo, Sligo and Leitrim.

A nationwide general yellow wind and rain warning has also been put in place ahead of the storm with strong southeast and south winds as well as extremely heavy rain expected.

The yellow weather warning is due to last from 10pm on Friday to 12pm on Saturday.

Met Eireann has warned that impacts like fallen trees and difficult travel conditions may continue throughout the weekend and into early next week.

Met Eireann outlook

Meteorologist Andrew Doran-Sherlock stated that: “Storm Bert will bring milder but very wet and windy conditions for the weekend.”

“Heavy rain on Saturday and Sunday will likely lead to localised flooding in urban areas and some river catchments particularly in the west and southwest, as this rain is falling on already saturated and waterlogged ground.”

Storm Bert is the second named storm of the 2024/2025 season and comes right after a cold snap which brought snow and icy conditions to the country.
