The body of a woman has been recovered from waters near Rusheen Bay this evening (Friday, 22 November, 2024).
Efforts to recover Maire Ní Fhátharta’s body have been ongoing for 11 days.
The search involved hundreds of local volunteers, the Gardaí, Coastguard, RNLI and the Civil defence.
Gardaí said this evening that the search has now been stopped, but the formal identification has yet to happen, and this process is ongoing.
They added that they continue to provide support to the loved ones of the missing woman and that a Family Liaison Officer has been appointed.
Gardaí also thanked the local Galway community, volunteer organisations, and search and recovery services for their care and assistance.
Ms Ní Fhátharta, who was in her early 30s, was reported missing on Tuesday, 12 November. She was one of two people going missing from Silverstrand that day.
The body of the other swimmer, 74-year-old Limerick native Johnny Duhan was recovered that Tuesday evening. The famous singer-songwriter was laid to rest on Friday, 15 November, after requiem Mass at St Killian’s Church, New Inn in East Galway.
