Another review of the speed limits set for roads throughout County Galway is on the cards following a pause in the examination which began last year.

Local councilors and communities are coming together in order to make a correct and unified decision regarding speed limits set for roads throughout the county. The aim of this initiative is to ensure the safety of road users following a number of road traffic collisions occurring in recent times.

The review had previously came to a halt, as a result of the matter being reviewed on a national level. There has been a significantly high number of deaths on Irish roads this year, which has led for concern for groups both locally and nationally.

Road Incidents in Galway

Over time, Galway City and County has become a hot spot for serious road incidents.

On Monday 16th October, a serious collision occurred between a cyclist and a van in the Westside area of Galway City. The cyclist was taken to University Hospital Galway and was treated for serious injuries.

Incidents such as this one has led for local people to become increasingly alarmed at the potential danger posed by having speed limits set too high for local roads.

The current review aims to eliminate this risk through correct and effective speed limits being placed on various roads throughout Galway.

Local Councilor Views

At County Hall last week, Local Councilor Martina Kinnane expressed her demand for a swift change in the reduction of various speed limits for roads in Galway. She warned that this matter should be acted upon immediately.

Council Management have confirmed that the review that had stopped for a number of reasons was now back underway. The guideline of the similar initiative taking place on a national basis will be taken into account.

Councilor Martina Kinnane said “I believe that if we can save even just one person’s life from reviewing this matter, then that is good enough for me. I have prioritised a number of areas that have slipped through the net in the last couple of years”.

Plans for the future of Galway‘s Roads

Changes for speed limits issued on roads throughout Galway may be made as early as the beginning of next year.

In addition to revising speed limits, the authorities in Galway are committed to promoting road safety education and awareness.

By reevaluating speed limits, Galway is setting a standard for road safety that ensures a bright and secure future for all road users.
