57 cases of coronavirus confirmed in Galway

57 cases of Covid-19 have been confirmed in county Galway, an increase of 12 on previous figures.

Three more people have died from coronavirus in the Republic of Ireland, bringing the total number of deaths to 22.

One person in the north-west of the country has died along with two women in the east.

To date, there have been no fatalities in Galway as a result of the virus.

302 new cases were confirmed today, bringing the total number to 2,121. This marks the biggest daily increase in the total number of cases to date.

So far 419 patients have been hospitalised with the disease with 59 of these admitted to ICU.

Taoiseach Leo Varadkar said today that all available ICU beds could be occupied “in a number of days”.

Community transmission now accounts for 52 per cent of cases, with close contacts making up 22 per cent. 26 per cent of cases are associated with travel abroad.

Earlier today Saolta Group tweeted a picture of healthcare staff in University Hospital Galway urging people to stay at home to contain the spread of coronavirus.
