Local community groups can benefit from Galway City Council’s Amenity Grant Scheme

By Katherine Condon

Local community groups can receive grants up to €350 in this year’s Galway City Council Amenity Grant Scheme.

The scheme, which is in its 20th year, has a total budget of €26,000 for 2020 and the deadline to apply is 18th March.

Resident associations, community gardens and allotment schemes are the kinds of groups that can apply for the scheme.

Grants that are awarded range from €150 for 30 houses and €350 for 150 houses.

Councillor Pauline O’Reilly of the Green Party said that communities need more support in order to improve their local area.

Cllr O’Reilly said “communities need more support. For example, community volunteers need to be given more resources such as litter bags and pickers.

“But it is a little money in the pot for people who want to improve their area. It’s money that goes towards buying things like seeds and flowerpots.”

Those interested in availing of the scheme can visit http://www.galwaycity.ie and go to the Environment, Litter and Waste section.
