From the hills of Donegal to Galway Bay, Proton Pool Party are storming the country with their new single ‘Stone Cold Killer’.
Matthew and Davy Byrne, Adam Cullen and David Brady are a new band hoping not to be tied down by any specific genre but to break through the music industry after releasing their single earlier this month.
“The chemistry was there, so now we’re a band” says Matthew as he describes how the band came to be.
The band will be showcasing their single on the 29th of October in the Róisín Dubh for their Halloween Party as they support ‘The Bog Project’ and ‘Cherry Pickers’.
The band is excited to play an iconic local stage and dress up for the festive occasion with costume ideas like “The School of Rock”.
The unique name derived from Leaving Certificate Biology and finding the humour in studying. Davy says the concept of learning about the process of photosynthesis was funny to him in school. Six years later the band had an upcoming gig and without a name, they called themselves ‘Proton Pool Party’.
Band members Matthew, David and Adam are studying music in the University of Galway and say playing music is their passion. “We haven’t fully found a sound yet; we’re still kind of finding it.” Adam says.
They say writing new songs “isn’t easy but there’s a good dynamic” and Matthew says, “if me or Adam came up with a riff and stuff we just start playing.” Davy also remarked it’s a vulnerable position to write a song, “it’s like pouring your heart out,” however “it feels natural.” with his new band mates.
The young men have been busy working on another new single ‘Blue’, calling it a ‘Frankenstein song’ as Davy and Matthew were working on two songs and decided to bring them together. Davy says the song is inspired by long-term relationships, the ups and downs that come with it and sticking by that person through it all.
Adam and Matthew are living the rockstar lifestyle with not too many plans in the near future but a hope to write some new songs to bring home while studying abroad next year as part of their course. Davy is also working on new material and has high hopes for the band’s future.
