Locals Gather for Annual Croí Night Run

By Daniel O’Neill
The annual Croí night run was held last Friday at the Salthill Prom.
This year was a major sellout success with thousands of locals of all ages taking part. Several runners even brought their young children to take on the challenge.
The Croí 5km night run, sponsored by Benecol, started near the entrance to Mutton Island and brought runners down along the Salthill prom before doing U-turn and making their way back to the finish line.
The Salthill Promenade was filled with locals showing their support. From the elderly to toddlers to pets, everyone made an effort to show their face and cheer their loved ones on in the run. Dáithi Ó Sé even made an appearance and took on the 5km trek.
When asking participants why they took part, many of them said they were running for a friend or loved one. One participant said, “Everyone knows someone with heart issues, so it’s all going towards a good cause.”
Another runner added, “I think it’s great to come together as a community and show our support. My father has heart issues, so it definitely hits close to home. And on top of it all it gives me a reason to get my daily sprint in.”
When we asked iRadio’s Conor Woods about why so many people turn up to the event year after year he said, “I think because it’s local, that’s the biggest thing. The fact that it’s for local services people really get behind it.”
He added, “I think it does so well because you’re a part of something that helps other people in your community. Theres about 2000 people here anyway, for a Friday night when you could be at home having your tea, it’s really good.”
All runners who took part were awarded a special limited edition Croí Night Run long-sleeve running top.
All proceeds raised by the event will go straight to the Croí Irish Heart and Stroke Charities services.
