Meeting in Eyre Square: A proposal for Universal Public Housing

Yesterday at 2 p.m., a group of people gathered in Eyre Square with the aim of drawing attention to the current housing crisis. This event, called ‘Day of Action For Housing Justice’, was organized by the political party Éirígí.

The proposal of Éirígí to end this problem is establishing Universal Public Housing. During the event they collected signatures from citizens, requesting for universal public housing to be built on the Dyke Road, the Sandy Road and at Galway Harbour. This petition will be summited to the Galway City Council and the LDA.

Additionally, some participants handed out flyers to the people who were passing by the zone, in which they explain in detail ther motion and also contain a QR code to sign the petition.

Later, the attendees moved around the surroundings distributing more flyers to some houses. And then, they headed to the entrance of the Augustine Hill urban quarter development.

“We do a lot of community activism like door to door, we do public meetings,” said Ian Ó Dálaigh, Éirígí Galway Representative, at the end of the event. “So the key thing for us is to, as many ways as possible highlight the potential that exists in Galway for UP housing, and to give people chances to get involved in the fight for housing justice.”
