Ireland Reclaims Triple Crown in the Six Nations

Last Saturday, Ireland claimed back the Triple Crown against Wales in what turned out to be a thrilling encounter at Cardiff’s Principality Stadium. Ireland secured a 27-18 victory over Wales, clinching the Triple Crown trophy in the 2025 Six Nations Championship, after losing it last year. This triumph marks Ireland’s 14th Triple Crown title, achieved by defeating all three fellow Home Nations: England, Scotland, and Wales.

The match was fiercely contested, with Wales displaying a revitalised performance under interim coach Matt Sherratt, giving Ireland a massive scare. Despite their spirited effort, Wales extended their unfortunate losing streak to 15 consecutive matches.

Ireland faced significant challenges during the game, notably playing with 14 men for a portion of the match following a red card issued to Garry Ringrose for a high tackle in the 32nd minute. The turning point came in the second half when Jamie Osborne executed a meticulously planned try, levelling the score at 18-18.

Fly-half Sam Prendergast showcased exceptional composure, contributing 17 points through successful penalty kicks, which ultimately sealed the victory for Ireland. Also a tour de force for Dan Sheehan, who marks his first nomination as captain with a victory.

Coach Simon Easterby praised his team’s resilience, emphasising their ability to overcome adversity and maintain focus as the game unfolded. “As the game wore on, I thought we delivered better territory, we managed the game much better and obviously took our points when we needed to” he declared before admitting “there’s lots of things that we could do better, but I think we come through a game which could have gone the other way”.

The Irish coach also congratulated his opponents on their performance. “Credit to Wales! We knew that they would change and playing at home for the first time in this Championship, so we certainly didn’t take them lightly and they did exactly what we expected them to do: they came out and got stuck into us, made it difficult, played some good rugby”.

As Ireland celebrates reclaiming the Triple Crown, their focus now shifts to maintaining momentum in pursuit of a potential Grand Slam in the 2025 Six Nations Championship.
