Sinn Féin TD for Galway West/South Mayo Mairéad Farrell has said that Sinn Féin’s healthcare reform plan will be ‘transformative’ for healthcare in Galway.

Sinn Féin’s spokesperson on Health, David Cullinane TD launched ‘Prescription for Change: Sinn Féin’s Plan to deliver healthcare when you need it’ on 29 October.

The plan includes more than 350 commitments across more than 60 policy areas spanning a broad range of health issues.

David Cullinane TD said that this is the ‘most extensive and comprehensive’ health plan ever produced by a political party.

He added that the plan would ‘transform healthcare’ and ‘set Ireland on course for full universal healthcare by 2035’.

The plan itself includes 25 key proposals across 10 sections as well as 5 first 100 Days commitments.

Some of the key proposals included in the publication of Sinn Fein’s health policy are to deliver 5,000 hospital beds by 2031, to deliver free prescription medicines for all households and to recruit 40,000 healthcare workers over 5 years.

Under the plan, 250 GPs would also be hired to work exclusively in the public health sector.

“Sinn Féin’s Plan to deliver healthcare when you need it is the most significant and comprehensive plan to transform healthcare in Ireland that has ever been put together by any political party,” said Mairéad Farrell TD.

“There will be an election shortly and voters will face a stark choice. This is a choice between the same failures on health that Fianna Fáil and Fine Gael have overseen. Or a vote to transform the healthcare system by voting for Sinn Féin.”

“Our plan will ensure that people can access a GP or a dentist when they need one; end the crisis in our emergency departments; cut waiting lists; deliver the biggest investment in the history of the state in mental health; bring Irish nurses and doctors home; and end wasteful spending.”

The full healthcare plan is available here.

The publication of Sinn Féin’s health policy comes after Taoiseach Simon Harris confirmed that the upcoming general election will take place in 2024.

The general election has since been confirmed to take place on 29 November. For more on the general election click here.
