League of Ireland Premier Division: Galway United 2-2 Sligo Rovers

By Jamie Curley

Galway United’s slim hopes of European football next season have ended following an enthralling 2-2 draw with Connacht rivals Sligo Rovers.

The Tribesmen found themselves behind on two occasions, but goals from Jimmy Keohane and Stephen Walsh saw the hosts salvage a point, ending both teams’ European aspirations.

A sold-out crowd of 4,300 attended Galway’s final home game of the 2024 campaign at Eamonn Deacy Park, with an absorbing game to follow.

Sligo Rovers started brightly as Reece Hutchinson’s long-range shot rebounded into the path of Luke Pearce, who struck home past Brendan Clarke. However, his elation was short-lived as the goal was disallowed for offside.

Galway United struggled to settle into the game, unable to conjure up any meaningful attacks for the most part. Edward McCarthy created the best opportunity of the half with some inventive link-up play with Keohane, who narrowly hit his effort wide.

Rovers enjoyed more possession and broke the deadlock towards the end of the half as Luke Pearce was avenged for his annulled goal. Simon Power’s cross found the head of William Fitzgerald, who parried it towards Pearce at the near post for a straightforward opener.

Galway United made three substitutes to rejuvenate their squad which worked to great effect. Jimmy Keohane was the difference maker this time around, as his header was buried into the bottom corner to give the hosts hope again.

Their equaliser was neutralised in the space of two minutes though, as Rovers came back to retake the lead. Hutchinson’s delivery into the box was caught by the head of Simon Power, who headed past Clarke to the joy of the raucous away end.

Patrick Hickey was the dangerman in the Sligo box, but he couldn’t find a way past Edward McGinty, who produced a number of saves to deny United.

The game exploded into life in the final quarter and it was substitute Stephen Walsh who got United’s second goal of the evening. David Hurley’s corner kick headed towards the far post and Walsh scored from six yards out to make it 2-2.

Galway overwhelmed Sligo in the remaining minutes as the visitors failed to escape their own half. Hurley came close with a free kick that was deflected wide from the wall, but neither side could produce that all-important winner.

Galway United will be confined to a midtable finish in the League of Ireland Premier Division, with one more game to go against Bohemians FC on Friday next.
