Mairéad Farrell named first female chair of PAC

By Ella Horgan
Galway West TD Mairéad Farrell has been appointed chair of the Public Accounts Committee (PAC).
She is the first female chair of the committee and the first from the West of Ireland.
Speaking following her appointment, the Sinn Féin TD said: “It is a great honour to not only be the first ever woman chair of the Public Accounts Committee but also the first chair from the West of Ireland.”
Deputy Farrell replaces Brian Stanley following his resignation from Sinn Féin, amid controversy. She has previously held the position of Spokesperson on Public Expenditure for the party.
In reference to recent spending, Deputy Farrell stated: “It is particularly frustrating for people in Galway and the West when many basic services have not been delivered while money is spent in a frivolous manner by state bodies.
“As chair I won’t tolerate such wastage and I will make sure that people are held to account when needed.”
Deputy Farrell intends to highlight the needs of her constituents, stating: “I think that it is important to bring a western perspective to this committee.”
The Sinn Féin TD cites “a much-needed ambulance” for Inis Oírr as a matter of importance.
Party leader Mary Lou McDonald congratulated Deputy Farrell on her appointment, expressing her confidence:
“Mairéad brings huge experience to the role and will represent the public interest in ensuring taxpayers money is spent properly.”
Her appointment follows a unanimous decision by the Oireachtas Selection Committee.
