The maintenance and appearance of the Seamus Quirke Road in Galway is becoming a worry according to Councillor John Connolly.

Cllr Connolly flagged the issues surrounding the road at Monday’s Galway City Council meeting. Cllr Connolly believes that the road has been neglected and needs to be improved as the city moves onto the busy summer months.

The road is connected to the N6 ringroad which has busy daily commuters travelling through.

“The N6 is maintained much better on the east side of the River Corrib and the Seamus Quirke Road is not being looked after in the same fashion”, said Cllr Connolly.

Accidents’ lasting effects

A collision damaged one of the barriers on Seamus Quirke road on 10 January, and the damaged barriers has not been repaired.

Cllr Connolly has pointed to the visible damage as a issue. The solution to the damage has a potential lifeline with the Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII), who allocate funds to city councils to improve transport links.

“Every year the council get an allocation from TII for the management and the maintenance of the national regions in the city.

“I would be hopeful that some of that money that would come from the TII would be used to improve the Seamus Quirke road in the near future”, said Cllr Connolly.

Untidy Roundabout

The Browne Roundabout likewise needs refurbishment, according to Cllr Connolly. According to him, the ‘eye’ of the roundabout in particular has been not maintained adequately.

Cllr Connolly raised the issue at the city council meeting on 4 March by saying that the roundabout has weeds growing around it and that it is a bad sight to behold.

“The Seamus Quirke Project has a substantial eye in the middle of it and it needs to be maintained and given a better look as we head into the summer months”, added Cllr Connolly.
