A car was recorded driving at 122km/h in an 80km/h zone in the Oranmore area of Galway on ‘National Slow Down Day’.

This was just one of over 900 detections for speeding across the country during the national campaign, which ran from 7am on Thursday 29 February to 7am on Friday 1 March.

The goal of National Slow Down Day, which is organised by An Garda Síochána, was to remind drivers of the dangers of speeding, to increase compliance with speed limits and to act as a deterrent to driving at excessive or inappropriate speeds.

A second vehicle was caught travelling at 99km/h in a 80km/h zone on the N6 at Bothar na dTreabh in Baille in Baile An Phoill. Outside the city, a vehicle exceeding the speed limit was also detected in Ballinasloe.

During the 24 hour campaign, Gardaí arrested three drivers who were detected speeding on suspicion of dangerous driving. A further three drivers who were pulled over for speeding were later arrested on suspicion of driving while intoxicated.

Road Deaths

In the first 59 days of 2024, 36 people have been killed in fatal road traffic collisions on Irish roads. That is four more lives lost when compared to the same period last year.

An Garda Síochána continues to appeal to drivers to comply with speed limits to reduce the number of speed related collisions, save lives and reduce injuries on our roads.
