The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced the nominees for the 96th Academy Awards.

Christopher Nolan’s historical epic ‘Oppenheimer’ lead the race with 13 nominations, including Best Picture, Best Director and Best Adapted Screenplay for Nolan, Best Supporting Actor for Robert Downey Jr., Best Supporting Actress for Emily Blunt, and Best Leading Actor for Cork-born Cillian Murphy for the role of J. Robert Oppenheimer.

Yorgos Lanthimos’s ‘Poor Things’ and Martin Scorsese’s ‘Killers of the Flower Moon’ snagged eleven and ten nominations respectively.

Poor Things brought Irish cinematographer Robbie Ryan his second Academy Award nomination, the first one being for his previous collaboration with Lanthimos on ‘The Favourite’ (2018).

Meanwhile, ‘Killers of the Flower Moon’s Lily Gladstone became the first Native American actress to be considered for the Leading Actress award.

Greta Gerwig’s ‘Barbie’ was nominated eight times for seven categories, with two songs vying for the Best Original Song award, those two being Mark Ronson and Andrew Wyatt’s ‘I’m just Ken’ and ‘What Was I Made For?’ by Billie Eilish and Finneas O’Connell.

While nominated for Best Original Screenplay alongside her co-writer/husband Noah Baumbach, Gerwig missed out on the consideration for Best Director for ‘Barbie.’ Similarly, ‘Barbie’s lead Margot Robbie was nowhere to be found on the ballot.

This marked a shift from the British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) Awards nominations which had given both women consideration for their respective awards.

In another contrast to the BAFTAs, neither Emerald Fennell’s ‘Saltburn’, headlined by Barry Keoghan, nor Andrew Haigh’s ‘All of Us Strangers’ lead by Paul Mescal received any nominations.

The 96th Academy Awards will take place on March 10, 2024 in Los Angeles in the Ovation Hollywood’s Dolby Theatre.
