Galway City Council have announced on Tuesday 17 October that €134,000 in funds have been allocated to 50 different sports clubs in the city. The funding comes from the sports club grant scheme.

29 clubs received the maximum grant of €3,500 whilst another seven had received over €2,000. The funding will help the clubs with equipment costs, coaching, travel arrangements and a significant amount will be for upskilling volunteers.

There is a wide range of variety in the 50 clubs that have been awarded the funds. The funding will help mainstream sports clubs such as five GAA clubs, nine football clubs, and four judo clubs. Minority sports clubs such as volleyball, lawn tennis, water polo and netball will also benefit.

In the announcement, the city council stated that the council has a strong record of supporting sport and the scheme will help many of the clubs’ volunteers.

“Galway City Council has a very strong record of supporting sport and physical activity in the city. This grants scheme assists the good work being delivered on the ground by the many dedicated volunteers across all sports.”

Galway Sports Partnership was thanked in the announcement for administering the grant on the behalf of the local authority.
