Galway City Council has announced the commencement of works to take place on Quay Street in Galway City Centre starting next week.
The works, which aim to remove uneven surfaces and surface water ponding in the street, are set to take place in two stages – Part A and Part B.
Part A of the works aim to focus on Quay Street Lower starting from next week, and are set to continue through October and November.
Christmas trading periods
Works will cease for the month of December and over the Christmas period, recommencing for Part B on 10 January, 2024. The work on Quay Street Upper is set to continue throughout January and February 2024.
Speaking about the works, Patrick Greene, Director of Services with Galway City Council said: “We are very conscious of avoiding works on the street during the peak summer and Christmas trading periods.”
Road closure
The works will be carried out under a formal road closure. Galway City Council shared that all necessary measures will be taken to ensure disruptions to businesses and the public are kept to a minimum and to ensure deliveries can take place.
“The team in Transport have been liaising with local businesses and stakeholders in the immediate vicinity of the works area, and engagement will continue throughout the project, with a dedicated point of contact available 24 hours a day,” Green said.
It is said that the Quay Street upgrades will have a positive long-term impact on one of Galway’s busiest streets.
