Parents and Residents Protest Over Urgent Road Safety Concerns at Bearna National School

Bearna, Co. Galway – April 1, 2025 – Parents, residents, and local representatives have announced a protest tomorrow over mounting road safety concerns at Bearna National School. Deputy Catherine Connolly has called on Galway County Council to take immediate action, emphasizing that the situation has worsened following the opening of a new garage in the village.

According to Connolly, repeated efforts by the community to engage with the Council have been met with inaction, despite clear acknowledgment of the problem. With no response from authorities, residents feel they have no choice but to take to the streets to highlight the risks faced by pedestrians, particularly schoolchildren.

The protest, which is scheduled for tomorrow, Wednesday, April 2, will see participation from neighboring communities, including Inverin, Spiddal, and Furbo, who are facing similar road safety challenges.

Connolly is now demanding urgent clarification on whether Bearna National School is included in the Safe Routes to School (SRTS) Programme, launched in 2021, and is also calling for a concrete action plan from Galway County Council to address the hazardous conditions.

Describing the situation as “intolerable,” Connolly stressed that the community cannot wait any longer for improvements to road safety in Bearna.
