A driver in Galway was detected speeding, travelling at 146km/ph in a 80km/ph zone in Oranmore on Friday 25 October during a Bank Holiday Policing Operation.

Nationwide, three lives were lost on Irish roads this Bank Holiday weekend with 2,150 drivers exceeding speed limits. These findings come after An Garda Síochána conducted a Roads Policing Operation this Bank Holiday weekend from 7am Thursday 24 October to Monday 28 October.

Another Galway driver was found exceeding the speed limit by 38km/ph on the Newcastle Road, travelling at 88km/ph in a 50km/ph zone.

The national figures also included a motorist who was found driving at 167km/ph in an 80km/ph zone in County Meath. In response to these levels of speeding Chief Superintendent of the Garda National Roads Policing Bureau, Jane Humphries has said:

“While we are generally seeing good levels of compliance with speed limits on roads around Ireland, I am gravely concerned by the risks taken by some drivers.”

Gardaí Response

Gardaí are labelling this behaviour as “unacceptable”, stating “these are deliberate and conscious decisions by drivers”. They name speeding and driving while intoxicated as the most dangerous driver behaviours and urge drivers to “please slow down”.

An Garda Síochána have advised drivers to abide by speed limits and be able to react to changes in road, weather and traffic conditions to ensure “every road user returns home safe”.
