Galway gets a rare snow shower

Galwegians experienced an episode of rare snow to kick off the month of March.

The Emerald Isle reached 0 degrees on the morning of Friday 1 March, turning the rain into flakes.

The last two weeks were patterned with longer days and some longer episodes of blue sky with an unusually dry climate.

This dryness is likely the reason that the streets of Galway turned white today.

Even Ballinasloe, a town supposed to mark the entrance of the West of Ireland, turned its curtain of rain into a flurry of snow.

It is a rare phenomenon for Connacht, which doesn’t often see snow.

The Atlantic currents usually keep the temperatures milder, often turning potential snow into rain.

This evening will be mainly dry with clear spells at first, but scattered showers will feed down from the north overnight, according to Met Éireann.

Some of the showers may be heavy with a chance of hail, with some frost and icy patches possible.
