A sea of green and Michael D as Galway prepares for St Patrick’s Day parade

Galway City Council announced last week that former president Michael D. Higgins will be the Guest of Honour at tomorrow’s 2026 St. Patrick’s Day parade.
Being a long-time champion of the arts and culture, Higgins’ presence brings special significance to this year’s celebration.
Speaking at the announcement, Higgins said the invitation for he and his wife Sabina to be principal guests was “deeply appreciated”
“We’d like to express our deep gratitude for the warmth of the reception home to Galway that we have received from so many individuals and groups.”
The Mayor of Galway, Cllr. Mike Cubbard, welcomed this announcement noting:
“His long‑standing connection to Galway and his commitment to arts, culture and community life makes his presence especially meaningful.”
As one of the region’s largest cultural events, thousands are expected to line the streets on Tuesday, and with Higgins in attendance, organisers say the 2026 parade promises to be a memorable occasion.
This year’s parade theme “Legends and Rising Stars” will spotlight the stories, people, and traditions that shape Galway. The 2026 programme will feature a diverse line-up of community groups, artists, performers, and youth organisations, according to the organisers.
2026 will also see the introduction of a relaxed space in Galway City, where individuals with sensory needs and anyone who may benefit from a quieter environment can take time away from the noise and bustle from the main parade. This includes space to move comfortably, nearby toilet access and protective earmuffs.
Adam Harris CEO of autism charity AsIAm, said the space would provide “a more predictable, comfortable and judgement free celebration on a day where the sensory environment, plans and crowds can be inaccessible for many in our community.”
