In with a fighting chance

by Rachel Kellaghan
Since he was 5 years old, Kieran Molloy has dreamt of becoming world champion, next month he takes one step closer to his dream.
The Galway boxer announced the biggest fight of his professional career, as he takes on Xavier Kohlen for the IBF Welterweight Title on March 20 in the Belfast SSC Arena.
The event will mark Molloy’s first professional title fight, and the stakes are high.
“The IBF European title is on the line as well, so a win here could push me up into the top 15 in the IBF World Rankings. By the end of this year, the goal is to be in line to be fighting for that world title,” said Molloy.
Impressive Stats
Molloy enters the fight with a record of 13 and 0, which is a testament to his hard work and dedication.
His training regime is tough, but Molloy is embracing the challenge. “I am just giving it everything, giving myself every opportunity. I don’t want to look back and regret anything,” he said.
His opponent, Xavier Kohlen is the current Dutch champion.
“He comes with a good record, 15 wins, and 2 losses. He’s been in a couple of title fights already, and he brings good experience, but this is the next step in my career. To be in these competitive fights, it will steer me in the right direction,” he said.
Irish Pride
With the big fight ahead of him, Molloy acknowledged the determination that got him here. “There’s a lot of sacrifice when you’re away from home all the time. You’re training twice, three times a day. It’s tough on the body. You miss out on a lot of events and birthdays.”
However, he commented that it is all worth it when his hand is raised in the ring.
“I’m very proud of where I’m from. I’ve always got the Galway and Irish flag in my corner. The support I receive has always been great; it’s very humbling.”
“It’s been a long road, but you know we’re heading the right way. I’m really excited for this fight,“ said Molloy.
