New Campus Watch booklet a ‘one-stop shop’ for student safety

In a proactive move to enhance student safety at third-level institutions across Ireland, An Garda Síochána has released a new Campus Watch Booklet.
An Garda Síochána have worked closely with colleges since the late 1990s as part of the Campus Watch Programme, aiming to create secure learning environments for all students.
The revised guide, available online in English and Irish, aims to inform students on dealing with both physical and digital threats they may encounter.
It addresses current risks facing students like phishing, sexual crime, accommodation scams, and road safety. It also advises students on safety on nights out, securing personal belongings, and respecting campus diversity.
A vital tool in educating Galway’s students
Galway is no exception to these challenges, especially with rising rates of phishing, and the ongoing accommodation crisis in the city.
Recognizing this, the University of Galway’s Student Union President, Faye Ní Dhomhnaill, has welcomed the resource as a vital tool in educating students both on and off campus:
“It’s great to see an initiative like this, in particular one that’s being supported by our colleagues in the Union of Students Ireland. It’s really important that students are aware of their rights in all aspects of life. Whether that’s tenant rights, or your rights in regards to crime.”
“I think it’s also very refreshing to see a section dedicated to reporting crime also. Quite often the narrative that’s pushed is one of how to not be a victim, instead of how to regain your control of the situation.”
A revised approach to the safety of young people
Chief Superintendent Padraic Jones of the Garda National Community Engagement Bureau, acknowledged the need for a revised approach to the programme. Now entering it’s fourth decade, the programme must reflect the evolving challenges facing the current student population:
“The new Garda Campus Watch Booklet now includes sections which cover online crimes such as phishing and romance fraud, while it also provides updates on accommodation fraud and money laundering.”
“These updates reflect our commitment to keeping students informed and better prepared to protect themselves and each other.”
The Campus Watch booklet is now readily available. An Garda Síochána hope students will use it as a continuous resource throughout their education.
