Galway Senior Football Championship Final: Corofin 2-9, Moycullen 0-9.

Match Report by James Varley

Corofin have won the Galway Senior Football Championship for a second straight year after comfortably sweeping aside an off-form Moycullen side with a final score of 2-9 to 0-9.

From the first minute, Corofin appeared the sharper outfit, with Moycullen making uncharacteristic mistakes for a team of their stature.

The wet and windy conditions in the recently revamped Tuam Stadium didn’t favour open football, with both teams trading scores from placed balls in the first quarter.

It wasn’t until the 26th minute when Corofin struck the jackpot. Moycullen goalkeeper Aindriú de Paor played the ball straight into the path of a Jack McCabe, who rolled the ball into an empty net.

Despite Moycullen having the lions share of possession , they went into the half down by five points.

Any hopes of a comeback for neutral supporters making the trip to Tuam were short lived. Corofin outscored the 2022 Champions four points to one to open the second half.

If the result of this final was in any doubt, Corofin’s ageless star Garry Sice finished clinically past a helpless de Paor in the 57th minute to extend their lead to 8.

Speaking to TG4 after the match, Corofin manager Kevin Johnson said that competition was key for his team’s success.

“They’re just such a special group, they have such honesty. You can make the choice to work hard or not, and these lads just love the work. We had five players on the Galway U20s this year that can’t get into our top 25 and that’s just down to competition.”

This win advances the now 23-time champions to the Connacht series, while Moycullen have a long winter to wait for another swing at the title, which they have now lost out to Corofin in the last two seasons.
