Amidst heavy winds and rain during storms, the Galway Society for the Protection of Animals (SPCA) provides shelter and care for the stray dogs and cats affected.
In addition to offering shelter, the Galway SPCA actively engages in rescue operations, providing medical care to animals that are injured, ill, or in need of first aid.
Sam O’Neill, the Galway SPCA Chairperson says, “Animals in our care come from various situations. They might be found wandering by the side of the road, lost, stray or even abandoned by their owners.”
A helping hand to animals in need
The organisation relies on a team of volunteers who respond promptly to calls from the public, ensuring that every rescued animal receives immediate and effective treatment.
“When we receive a call from someone who has discovered an animal roaming the streets or abandoned, our team of volunteers responds to the situation,” says Mr O’Neill. “They had to be very careful not to scare them, as usually they were in distress. If they ran off, they might have gotten injured further or worse.”
After the necessary health evaluations and care, the animals are ready for adoption. Community members come to adopt and give these animals a warm home.
Adoption advocates
Galway SPCA advocates for the ‘Adopt, don’t shop’ approach, encouraging people to adopt pets instead of buying them.
Information about animals available for adoption is posted on their website and social media platforms, where adopters are required to fill out a detailed application form.
Volunteers ensure the best match between animals and adoptive families through a rigorous screening process.
“Those seeking to adopt any of our animals fill out an adoption form. We [go] through every form and try to match the best situation for the animal,” says Mr O’Neill.
GalwaySPCA has facilitated the rehabilitation of countless animals, where they have received the necessary care and treatment. Moreover, they find hope and a new beginning.
