Portumna Hotel to rise from the ashes

By Amy Blaney

Galway County Council have approved plans to refurbish the former Shannon Oaks Hotel in Portumna.

The hotel was destroyed in a massive fire in 2016, after a deep fryer allegedly went on fire.

The restored hotel will include a single storey restaurant extension, as well as alteration and reconstruction of the front of the building, and landscaping.

Developments were previously stalled due to a colony of bats roosting in the vacant building.

The hotel is now owned by two Galway billionaire property developers, Luke and Brian Comer, owners of the Comer Group.

Planning permission for the site was requested on the 25th July 2019 under Dalakhani Unlimited Company.

Galway County Council planners have attached 13 conditions to the plans. One of the conditions states the applicant must submit a revised site layout plan.

The conditions also state that amplified music or entertainment noise is not to exceed an agreed background noise level during the hours of 8am and 10pm.
