Deportation of Athenry man suspended following campaign by local residents and politicians

Justice Minister Charlie Flanagan has suspended the deportation of Athenry resident Lucivaldo Araujo Silva.

Mr Silva was being held in Cloverhill Prison ahead of his deportation tomorrow, but will now be released until his case is reviewed.

Originally from Brazil, he has been illegally residing in Athenry for the past 12 years.

Mr Silva works as a painter and is married with three children, all of whom were born in Ireland.

Minister Flanagan’s decision comes after a campaign by local politicians and Athenry residents to allow him to stay in Ireland.

Galway East TD Anne Rabbitte had publicly appealed to the Minister for Justice to allow the family to stay in Ireland.

Deputy Rabbite said: “This family is much-loved in the area and their friends and neighbours are rallying around them to try and save this family.”
