Itzacon members were disappointed as attendance was impacted by Storm Dennis at NUI Galway.
Itzacon secretary Karl Wilson acknowledged the event’s niche interest, but said interest has been steadily growing in his four years working for the event, so a lower turnout was not expected.
“It is a very niche thing but it’s definitely growing. Since I started four years ago, it’s gone from strength to strength,” said Mr Wilson
“Even just in Ireland, Dungeons and Dragons and the kind of topics that we have here in Itzacon they’ve been getting more and more popular as well. It’s definitely a growing market.”
Itzacon, a board, card and role-playing game convention, is associated with the fantasy-science society at NUI Galway, who were also joined by the video game society and various outside groups with similar interests, such as Galway Exiles.
This was Itzacon’s 16th annual event, with the first one being held in 2005.
Storm Dennis wreaked havoc on Galway’s streets last weekend, which also saw the cancellation of Galway’s match against Tipperary in the National Hurling League.
