After two hours of meeting on Monday evening, Galway City Councilors rejected an application for an extra €2.5m funding to Galway 2020 European capital of culture project.
Galway City Council had already committed €6m and Galway County Council committed €4m to the project.
Meanwhile, the project has also €15m incoming from the Department of Culture.
Still, the project has failed to generate a targeted private sponsorship of €7m outside of the state support.
This was not the first time that the project demanded money from the local authorities.
In a report presented to councilors at a special meeting last month, the Chief Executive recommended that €1.25m should be provided in the two years following the European designation – 2021 and 2022.
City manager Brendan McGrath said a “full” and “exciting” 2020 program would still go ahead without the extra €2.5m, as there was still a total budget of €39.15m.
