Nominations Open for Galway People of the Year

By Declan Harte

The nominations close this Thursday for the 25th annual Galway People of the Year Awards 2020.

The aim of these awards, recognised as being one of the highest accolades a person can receive in the county, is to give public recognition to individuals and/or groups who, through their personal leadership, participation, courage or achievements have made an outstanding contribution in their local communities at home or abroad.

“Over the years some of the winners have been known across the length and breadth of the country while others were in the spotlight for the first time,” said a spokesman for the award.

“The one thing that they all had in common was the fact that they were all ordinary people who had worked incredibly hard to enrich the lives of others and could be seen as role models for the next generation.”

Every winner will be chosen by the people of Galway through a public nomination process and finalised by an independent adjudication panel.

This year the awards are organised in partnership with Galway Credit Unions and were launched in St Jarlath’s Credit Union, Tuam.

Speaking at the launch, Awards Organiser Ollie Robinson said they were delighted to be working in partnership with Galway Credit Unions and looked forward to seeing what the future would bring.

He urged members of the public to ensure they submit nominations, as while there were many potentially worthy nominees, only those put forward by members of the public could be considered.

He also said that a well-known Galway charity would be the beneficiary of this year’s awards fundraiser and all details would be announced at a press reception in early February.

If you know someone who has done their community proud at home or abroad, people who bring joy and light to the lives of others, someone who has shown true strength and courage in the face of adversity, or those who have supported others in their darkest hour, why not nominate them for a Galway People of the Year award?

Individuals or groups can also be nominated for their contribution to the local community, enterprise and employment, arts culture, charity work, sport, leadership, work in the media etc.

The nomination process is easy; simply put forward the name of the individual or group you wish to nominate and your reason for doing so along any supporting material you might have.

The nominations have been extended till Thursday morning February 13 as the judges were unable to meet until then. Nominations can be sent by post to Ollie Robinson Limehill, Tynagh, Loughrea, Co Galway or by email to or can be dropped into your local credit union.

The awards will be presented at a gala function in the Galway Bay Hotel on Saturday 21st March.
